We had Chelsea's birthday dinner tonight at Locale. It's in King City, which is pretty far from where we live (about 30 minutes on the highway), but it was totally worth the trek. Our menu for the evening:
- Calamari & gamberi fritti with herbs and lemon
- Friggitelli (fried shishito peppers) with parmigiano
- Ndujatta pizza with spicy 'Nduja Calabrese sausage, tomato sauce, fresh basil, fresh burrata, and olive oil
- Pappardelle al cinghiale (slow braised wild boar sugo) with shaved reggiano
- Butterscotch budino with caramel, Maldon salt, and cookie crumble
- Castagnole with apple, fried to order
Highlights for me were the calamari, which had the most perfect, delicate, crispy golden batter; the Ndujatta pizza, where the spicy smokiness of the sausage worked in perfect harmony with the creamy burrata; and the pappardelle, which was cooked al dente and tossed in a ridiculously tasty tomato-based sauce with huge chunks of ultra-tender wild boar. Also, our server was amazing. I don't remember his name, but he's the only Asian server there. He's extremely informative, incredibly accommodating, very nice with a great sense of humour, and perfectly attentive (he checked in on us at regular intervals but it never felt interruptive, and was genuinely curious as to how we enjoyed our food). This is a rare case where the service was just as memorable as the food, and it's this combination that makes it my new favourite Italian restaurant in the Greater Toronto Area.
