MAC Selena: Lipstick in Amor Prohibido, Dreaming of You, and Como La Flor

Tomorrow, MAC will be launching their collaboration with Selena in select stores across North America. Selena Quintanilla was a Grammy award-winning recording artist and singer from Texas who died from a gunshot wound in 1995. Called the 'Queen of Tejano music,' "her contributions to music and fashion made her one of the most celebrated Mexican-American entertainers of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine named her the 'top Latin artist of the '90s' and the 'best selling Latin artist of the decade.' She also ranks among the most influential Latin artists of all-time and is credited for catapulting a music genre into the mainstream market." 

This collection was curated with Selena's sister, Suzette, who was "inspired by the devotion of all those who continue to be touched by the young legend 20 years on from her untimely passing." There is a total of 14 products in this collection, of which 10 are new and limited edition and four are re-promotes in special deco packaging. Selena sees the launch of three new and limited edition lipsticks. They are housed in a special edition royal purple tubes with Selena's signature in a lavender-grey on the side. Each lipstick contains a total of 3 grams of product, and retails for $22.50. Due to the special edition nature of this collection, these will not be redeemable as a free product in the Back to MAC recycling program.

Amor Prohibido is a medium warm pinked brown in a Glaze finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium pigmentation and semi-sheer to semi-opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is more brown than Hug Me, more brown and less shimmery than Viva Glam V, and lighter and more pink than Touch.

Dreaming of You is a medium-deep warm burgundy red in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is warmer than Diva, cooler than Studded Kiss, and darker than Viva Glam I.

Como La Flor is a medium-dark cool vibrant cherry red in a Amplified finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is darker than MAC Red, darker and shinier than Ruby Woo, and darker and cooler than Cockney.

None of the shades here are new — we've all seen multiple dupes for these both within MAC's permanent range and in limited edition launches like this one — but it has to be said that all three shades here are widely flattering across all skintones from fair to deep-dark, and warm to cool. All of these textures are lovely, too; the Glaze (Amor Prohibido) is creamier and more pigmented than a typical Glaze finish (it feels more like a Cremesheen), the Matte (Dreaming of You) is creamy and non-drying, and the Amplified (Como La Flor) was less creamy so that it didn't bleed or melt like a lot of Amplifieds do. All three are soft and smooth and are comfortable to wear. As with the eyeshadows, MAC and Selena's sister really did a great job of curating these shades — they will suit all skintones while still reflecting Selena's spirit and aesthetic. Plus, they're great shades for fall and winter. As of today, all of the products from the Selena collection are sold out online from MAC and all official partners, but you will still have a chance of grabbing them in select stores tomorrow if you live in Canada or the US.
