MAC Viva Glam Ariana Grande: Lipstick and Lipglass

For those who don't already know about MAC's Viva Glam program, every cent of the entire selling price of every Viva Glam product sold goes to the MAC AIDS Fund. Every year, MAC appoints a celebrity to be their Viva Glam ambassador to help raise HIV/AIDS awareness. Every Viva Glam lip product that has been launched after Fergie's Viva Glam VI Special Edition in 2009 has been named after the celebrity ambassador of the year, with Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper in 2010, Lady Gaga again in 2011, Nicki Minaj and Ricky Martin in 2012, Nicki Minaj again in 2013, Rihanna for 2014, Miley Cyrus for 2015, and Ariana Grande for 2016. To date, MAC's Viva Glam campaign has raised $400 million globally to help men, women, and children infected and affected by AIDS and HIV.

Viva Glam Ariana Grande comes in both lipstick and lip gloss form, and will both launch in-stores this Thursday. Both are limited edition and will be available for six months (subject to change). As with all MAC lip products, they are vanilla-scented but taste-free. Each Viva Glam Ariana Grande Lipstick comes in black packaging with the signature Viva Glam red metal casing and Ariana's signature printed in black around it. Each Lipglass comes in a clear tube with Ariana's signature printed in red around it. Each lipstick contains 3 grams of product, and retails for $20. Each Lipglass comes with a doe-foot applicator, contains 4.8 grams of product, and retails for $18. As they are for charity, none of the Viva Glam products are applicable for the Back to MAC recycling program.

Viva Glam Ariana Grande Lipstick is a deep dark cool wine-plum in an Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade, and will be available for six months going forward. It has a soft and creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is slightly more reddened than Instigator, more purple than Media, and slightly darker and less matte than High Drama Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick.
Viva Glam Ariana Grande Lipglass is a transparent pink-tinted base with gold and silver iridescent sparkle. This is a new and limited edition shade, and will be available for six months going forward. It has a slightly tacky texture, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has low pigmentation with sheer colour pay-off. It is similar to Sugarrimmed Dazzleglass, less pink than Baby Sparks Dazzleglass, and more pink than Lustrewhite Lustreglass.

MAC has a knack for choosing controversial celebrities for their Viva Glam campaigns (e.g. RuPaul, Pamela Anderson, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, etc.), and this year is no different with Ariana Grande. I'm sure many people have strong and differing opinions about her, but in the end, if Ariana can use her fame and popularity to sell a product that goes directly to charity, I'm all for it. To date, the Viva Glam Ariana Grande Lipstick is the darkest shade in the entire Viva Glam line-up, so for those who like their vampy matte shades, this one's for you. It works out well to launch it during the winter, too, since dark lips are still on trend right now, and it's not too purple or too red, so it will flatter all skintones and complexions. The Lipglass, on the other hand, is extremely wearable because it only adds sparkle to your lips, so it makes a great layering gloss as well, but it also means it's extremely dupeable. There are lots of similar shades within MAC's permanent line-up for both the lipstick and the gloss, so you might want to swatch in store to see if you have something similar and if it's worth adding to your collection. That having been said, both of these support a really great cause, so if you're on the market for a dark vampy lipstick or a sparkly gloss that goes with everything, these are well worth getting.

The MAC AIDS Fund is one of the most effective charities I have ever seen a cosmetics company identify with, and it still blows my mind that MAC helps this charity on a daily, on-going basis with their Viva Glam program. Not only that, but they don't just donate a portion or the proceeds to this cause — it's 100% of the selling price of any Viva Glam product. This is a really worthy cause, so if you're not personally a fan of these, it's worth checking out any of the other Viva Glam shades that may be more wearable or flattering on you.

  2. I actually really like the lipstick although I won't be buying it. It's a good addition to the Viva Glam collection.

    1. I totally agree, it's something different in the Viva Glam range that we haven't seen before. Sadly, it's similar to a lot of shades that MAC already has (Instigator, Media, Smoked Purple, Cyber, Film Noir), so it's not gonna be a must-have for a lot of people. And though it's widely flattering, it's not going to appeal to a lot of people (it's obviously geared for the younger generation). But it's still my favourite celebrity Viva Glam after Cyndi Lauper's!
