MAC Caitlyn Jenner: Buddy Powder Blush Duo

Monday, January 9, 2017

Last Thursday, MAC launched their collaboration with Caitlyn Jenner, a collection that is meant to "continue her mission of sharing her transition with the world, championing All Ages, All Races and All Sexes." It includes a total of 15 products, of which 11 are new and limited edition and four are permanent and in special edition packaging. The Caitlyn Jenner collection sees the launch of one new and limited edition Powder Blush Duo, that is "designed by and for professionals, formulated to provide fantastic colour with ease and consistency. Applies evenly, adheres lightly to skin for natural-looking colour that stays put all day." It is housed in a black soft-touch mirrored compact with a metallic gold lid. Each Powder Blush Duo contains 10 grams of product, and retails for $34.

Buddy

Buddy (Shade #1, Shade #2, and mixed)

Buddy #1 is a medium rosy brown in a satin-matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more pink than Prism, similar to Blushbaby, and more brown than Mocha.
Buddy #2 is a medium peachy pink with gold shimmer-sheen in a frosted finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky, finely-milled texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and more pink than Springsheen, similar to Peachykeen, and darker and more peach than Dainty.

The Caitlyn Jenner collection as a whole has gotten a lot of backlash since it was launched, but I am not here to judge her nor to write my personal opinion about her as a person, so I want to make it clear that I am reviewing this as a makeup artist, enthusiast, and collector. That aside, I've gotta say, this is by far MAC's most impressive blush duo to date, at least texturally. Their previous blush duos (from Selena, Ellie GouldingPedro Lourenço, Rihanna, etc.) have a sort of invisible outer layer on top that makes them seem stiff and dry initially, so you have to rub or scrape off that layer to get to the actual pigment, but this one is silky, smooth, and pigmented from the get-go. The colours are what really speak out to me here — these are both workhorse shades that will flatter a multitude of complexions from fair to medium-deep (they will start to look ashy on darker skin tones). I also like that they have one shade that is more matte and one that is shimmery so you have choice in both shade and finish in one compact. And if you mix them together, they create the most gorgeous peachy rose with a soft golden sheen that leaves your cheeks looking fresh and dewy and healthy — beautiful on everyone of all ages for all year round.
