Saturday Nine: If I Knew You Were Comin' I'd've Baked a Cake (1950)

This week's Saturday Nine:

(Unfamiliar with this week's tune? Hear it here.)

  1.  This song is performed by a woman who is positively tickled to have unexpected company. How do you feel when people drop by unannounced? I don't really get people that drop by unannounced these days, but I generally don't like it unless it's a UPS or FedEx guy dropping off a package from an online shopping binge. I like looking presentable to people and if I'm at home, I'm usually in my jammies with no makeup on.

  2. She is clearly proud of her skills in the kitchen. Do you enjoy baking? Cooking? It's not that I don't enjoy baking or cooking, I just don't do them because I either don't have the time or I'm too lazy.

  3. Reference is made to hiring a band. Tell us the last time you were at an event with live music. The Deftones concert in August at International Centre.

  4. After making recordings in the early 1950s, Eileen Barton appeared on daytime TV in the early 1960s — including a game show called Video Village. Let's say we're all headed to a TV game show taping this morning. Would you volunteer to appear as a contestant? Or would you rather just stay in the audience? I'd rather just stay in the audience. I don't like public attention.

  5. In 1961, Ms. Barton got married in Juarez, Mexico. What's the longest distance you've ever traveled to attend a wedding? Um, maybe half an hour? But I don't go to a lot of weddings. I've traveled further to do makeup for a wedding than to actually attend one.

  6. In 1950, when this song was popular, the Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup. Are you looking forward to the upcoming NHL season? Not particularly. My guy friends love hockey and follow the Leafs religiously, though, so I usually know if our team is doing well or not. But I don't invest a lot of time into NHL games in general. The only time I really care about hockey is during the Winter Olympics.

  7. 1950 also marks the first time anyone in the United States paid by credit card. Do you pay with a credit card to get rewards? If yes, what rewards are you accumulating (points, cash back, airline miles)? Nope.

  8. In 1950, an athlete named Florence Chadwick swam the English Channel. Are you a good swimmer? Now, probably not. I haven't gone swimming (like, actual swimming, not just wading in a lake) in well over 15 years. But I did swim a lot as a kid and even took lifeguarding courses, so I suppose I was decent once a upon a time. At least, good enough to pass all of my Canadian Red Cross Swimming Levels.

  9. Random question: Think about the last "white lie" you told. Was it to spare someone's feelings, or to make your day go more smoothly? Probably to spare someone's feelings, thereby making their day (and my day, too, come to think of it) go more smoothly.

  1. Oh, nice to know that you could save me if we ever go swimming for whatever reason, lol. I should really take adult swimming lessons, especially now that I live in a building with an indoor pool.

    1. LOL! Yes, should we ever find ourselves in a body of water, I could help you out. :P

And yeah, you should! The Canadian Red Cross has adult swimming courses that you can take!
