MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour in Tailored to Tease, Oh, Lady, High Drama, and Recollection

Tomorrow, MAC will be launching a new product called Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour, which is described as "a lip colour that provides a splash of colour in a liquid-suede finish that lingers." (It is only available online right now.) There is a total of 15 shades, all of which will be added to the permanent range. They are housed in clear tubes with MAC's classic lipstick caps featuring a new pointed sponge applicator with a hole in the centre that holds the product for full saturated colour in one swipe. Each Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour contains 5 ml of product, and retails for $24. As these are a different formulation with a different price point, they are not redeemable in the Back to MAC recycling program.

Tailored to Tease, Oh, Lady, High Drama, and Recollection

Tailored to Tease, Oh, Lady, High Drama, and Recollection

Tailored to Tease is a medium-deep vibrant cool-toned fuchsia pink in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is lighter than Flat Out Fabulous, darker and warmer than Personal Statement Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour, and much cooler than To Matte with Love Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour.
Oh, Lady is a dark cool-toned berry wine in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is darker and more muted than Rebel, darker and more purple than Amorous, and lighter and more pinked than High Drama Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolour.
High Drama is a deep dark cool-toned plum in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on somewhat streaky and unevenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more purple than Sin, more matte than Media, and warmer and more reddened than Smoked Purple.
Recollection is a medium-dark cool-toned violet purple in a suede-matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. It has a lightweight, mousse-like texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more blue-toned than Heroine, darker and more blue-toned than Men Love Mystery, and more blue-toned and more matte than Violetta.

A lot of people have been like, "Oh, MAC is finally coming out with liquid lipsticks." Except what they don't realize is that MAC came out with liquid lipsticks over a decade ago (in a formula called Pro Longwear Lipcolour) and no one cared about it because it wasn't on trend until this past year. They have been slowly phasing out Pro Longwear Lipcolour over the past couple years (if you are a fan of this formula, grab your favourite shades before they're gone forever) to make room for the new Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours. Now, the biggest difference between the two is texture; whereas the Pro Longwear Lipcolour had a runnier, thinner consistency, the Retro Matte Liquid Lipcolours have more of a lightweight mousse-like texture. They are slightly drying in the way that long-wearing matte products are, but there is some cushion to them that keeps them from being uncomfortable to wear (I actually find these more comfortable to wear than MAC's regular Retro Matte lipsticks).

They are transfer-proof and water-resistant for the most part so they do wear very well (most of them wear about eight hours before fading), but they come off with oil, so obviously if you're eating something particularly greasy, the lip product will fade. That having been said, I find these easy to re-apply or touch-up without streaking or bunching or cracking, or without lifting the initial layer of colour on the lip. Most of these shades seem to be self-levelling, so even though they may appear streaky at first, they even out during the dry-down period (which is about 30 seconds to a minute). The applicator is actually what sets this apart for me, personally; it is a short, flexible, pointed-tip sponge applicator with a hole in the centre of it to hold on to product, which allows for a precise, smooth, even, and fully opaque application of colour with excellent control. MAC came out with a nice initial range of shades that encompasses light to dark and muted to bright — I'm glad to see some more classic, wearable shades versus ultra-trendy, seasonal shades — so that there's something for everyone, regardless of age or skintone.

  1. Oh, Lady and High Drama are so gorgeous and beautiful, I would buy myself despite the high price.

    1. Oh, Lady is my favourite! I find the price to be reasonable for the brand; it's pretty consistent with its competitors like Kat Von D and Anastasia!
