Last Thursday, MAC released a new collection in-stores called Vamplify, which sees the release of 12 new and permanent shades of Pro Longwear Lip Pencil. MAC describes Pro Longwear Lip Pencil as "a new generation of long-wearing lip pencil technology. Glides on fluidly and adheres instantly. Defines the lips with an instant release of rich, saturated colour. Prolongs the hours between re-application. Transfer proof." Each Pro Longwear Lip Pencil comes in regular black packaging, contains 1.2 grams of product, and retails for $24.

Good Timing, Voltage, He Said, She Said, Rebellious, Ms. Diva, and Dark Out

Good Timing is a light-medium cool-toned pink in a matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is cooler than Edge to Edge, and slightly darker than Hip 'n' Happy.
Voltage is a medium vibrant coral orange in a matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more orange than Lasting Sensation, and more muted and more pink than What a Blast!.
He Said, She Said is a medium-dark warm brick red in a matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is darker and warmer than Kiss Me Quick, and similar to Brick.
Rebellious is a medium-dark cool berry magenta in a matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is similar to Nightingale, and lighter and brighter than Vino.
Ms. Diva is a dark cool burgundy red in a matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more red than Burgundy, and less berry than Dark Out.
Dark Out is a dark cool berry wine in a matte finish. This is a new and permanent shade. The texture is soft and creamy, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is lighter and more red than Bespoken For, and slightly more red than Vino.

Lip pencils are back in a big way (I think we might have Kylie Jenner to blame for this one as well, sadly), and now I find it more and more common for people to consider lip pencil a must-have, to the point where some will even forego lipstick and use lip pencil to fill in the whole lip. This is where the Pro Longwear Lip Pencil formula is especially effective: they feel creamy and smooth going on, glide on effortlessly with full colour pay-off, dry down to a matte finish, and once they set, they do not budge. They wear for at least six hours; darker and brighter shades will wear at least eight without fading, and you'll need a make-up remover to take off any remnants of the pencil. I find these especially great for wearing underneath lipstick and lip gloss; they really prolong the wear of anything that sits on top of them. MAC is focusing on the Pro Longwear range because they will be discontinuing the Cremestick Liner formula, and with 12 new shades being added to the permanent range, there's definitely something for everyone. That having been said, a lot of shades here are dupes for existing shades that are in MAC's original Lip Pencil formula. If you have Nightingale, for example, you probably don't need Rebellious, unless you really wanted to switch over to the Pro Longwear formula. I would check your stash at home to see what you already have, and then try these out in-store to see if you prefer this formula. The texture of these is usually love-it-or-hate-it; those who love long-wearing products will probably get along great with these, but those who aren't used to the drier, more clingy feel of long-wearing products will probably be better off with the original Lip Pencil formula.

  1. You're right, lip pencils are definitely popular again! I was never a big lip pencil fan but have found myself picking up several over the past 6 months. In fact, I just grabbed Ms. Diva today :) It was a lovely summer, but I'm SO ready for the change in season - bring on the vampy, moody colors!

    1. I was the same way, I didn't really see the point of lip pencils until I started using them. I don't think they're really necessary for more nude lips unless you're using pencils to overdraw or to add dimension, but I consider them must-haves for bright or dark lips. And yes, I agree, I'm so ready for vampy lips!

  2. i guess if you're filling in your whole lip, you don't need a lipstick since you're going to cover your whole lip in color anyways? i always just thought of pencils as a 'insurance policy' for lipsticks to help them stay on more

    1. Some people use pencils to keep their lipsticks to stay on longer, but I often use them to perfect the lip shape and to add more dimension. You don't realize the difference it makes until you start using them. I also like to use them to change a lipstick shade, like if I wanted a more purple-toned burgundy, then I'll use a burgundy lipstick with a more purple liner. Some people fill in the whole lip with lip liner for a few reasons, but the top ones are to keep lipstick on longer or as I mentioned, to alter the shade of a lipstick or lip gloss.
