MAC — MAC Is Beauty: Eyeshadow in Preening, Bouffant, Yogurt, and Wow Factor

Yesterday, MAC released their major annual Spring colour collection called MAC Is Beauty, inspired by spas, salons, and "a world of pure, delicious vanity, where you can preen supreme to get that wow factor, emerging perfectly coiffed, polished, and all glammed up. What's wrong with being a little high-maintenance?" The entire collection features a total of 49 products, of which 18 are new and limited edition, 13 are re-promotes, 10 are permanent, five are re-promotes and will become permanent, and three are new and will become permanent. MAC Is Beauty will see the launch of four shades of eyeshadow. Each eyeshadow comes in regular black packaging, contains 1.5 grams of product, and retails for $19. These are applicable for the Back to MAC recycling program at MAC Stores.

Clockwise from left: Preening, Bouffant, Yogurt, and Wow Factor

Preening, Bouffant, Yogurt, and Wow Factor

Preening is a light cool-toned mint green with a very subtle sheen in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. There is nothing similar in MAC's permanent range.
Bouffant is a light warm pinked peach with a frosted sheen in a Veluxe Pearl finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and less frosted than Jest, darker than Naked Lunch, and lighter and more peach than All That Glitters.
Yogurt is a light muted cool-toned pastel pink in a Matte finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter and more pink than Orb, more pink than Blanc Type, and lighter than Malt.
Wow Factor is a medium lilac purple in a Matte finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. There's nothing really similar to this in MAC's permanent range; it is warmer and more matte than Beautiful Iris, lighter and more muted than Creme de Violet, and warmer and more pinked than Mancatcher (Purple Times Nine).

Pastels for Spring is not new concept, but here are three lovely brand new offerings from MAC. Yogurt is the only permanent colour here, but it is one of MAC's bestselling shades and is surprisingly versatile; many people use it as a highlight colour or an all-over lid shade because it comes off as more muted on the skin rather than chalky pink. It's especially ideal for those who have cooler skintones (I prefer Brule or Orb for warmer complexions). No need to rush out to get it, but it is a great staple shade. Preening definitely wins for most unique shade here, since there is nothing remotely similar to it in MAC's permanent range (and nothing that I can really think of in their limited releases, either). It's very soft and finely-milled, and surprisingly pigmented — these types of shades (especially mattes) are usually patchy and difficult to use, but Preening applies beautifully. If you're looking for a creamy pastel mint green shadow, this one is definitely worth looking into. Bouffant is a gorgeous, versatile shade for all. It's not the most exciting colour, but it's by far the most wearable and not too frosted so that you can wear it in the day or at the office. It is a pretty dupeable colour, but it is a true workhorse eyeshadow that can be used all year round. Wow Factor is a fun semi-pastel option for purple shadow lovers or for those looking for a softer pop of colour. It's not light enough to be a true pastel, but it provides a soft wash of purple that is actually quite daytime-friendly. That having been said, it has enough depth to be used as a crease colour, and enough vibrancy to add a pop of colour to a neutral look. Again, I'm surprised at how pigmented it is because these types of shades usually go on pretty sheer and patchy. All four are a total win in terms of texture and execution. Perfect shades for Spring, and released just in time for Easter!

  1. Oooh, so nicely pigmented for pastels! I wish they came in a palette - then I would swoop upon them. I wanted to buy that pastel lip palette because I figured they could be used elsewhere on the face, but it was sold out super quickly online and I don't want it badly enough to search stores for it.

    1. Lol, fair enough, though I think the reason they didn't put it in a palette is because a lot of people want one or two shades but not the others (pastels are usually a harder sell). Also because MAC just launched their x9 and x15 palettes, so they probably don't want them to compete. :P

Oh, the Mia Moretti palette? Ya, I'm not sure how many stores are evening carrying it. I think maybe only Eaton Centre. I wasn't that interested in it because I'm not sure I would even use it, lol. But it is pretty to look at! I was hoping to get some of the Julia Petit collection but again, it sold out so fast online and it's not available at most stores here (again, I think only Eaton Centre and possibly PRO store). I'm kinda sick of these super-exclusive collections, to be honest. Unless you're online at the time of the launch, it's almost impossible to get your hands on any of the products.

    2. Yeah, I was a little frustrated by so many nice, small collections hitting us at once but not being able to get anything without a supreme effort. Wouldn't they make more money by having more stores sell them?

    3. Ya, but MAC's great at creating hype. They do it on purpose. It creates more exclusivity, which means that "must-have" mentality. If these collections were more widely available, it wouldn't be as exciting and more people would be like, "Eh, I can wait."

  2. PREENING, OMG. I love mint. Too bad I'm moving and we just bought another car and unless I can eat it, I can't buy it, LOL.

    1. LMAO! I guess car + food is a teeny tiny bit more important... Where are you moving to? Didn't you just move into your current place not too long ago?
