MAC Brooke Shields: Lipstick in Excite and Gospel

on
Monday, October 6, 2014

Last Thursday, MAC launched a collection in collaboration with iconic actress and model Brooke Shields. This collection sees the launch of 14 products, nine of which are new and limited edition, three of which are re-promotes, and two of which are permanent. Brooke Shields sees the release of two new and limited edition shades of lipstick. Each lipstick comes in special edition light grey square metallic tubes with bright orange accents, featuring Brooke's signature and MAC's logo in an orange square on the lid, and matching secondary cardstock packaging. Each lipstick contains a total of 3 grams of product, and retails for $26. Due to the special edition packaging, these are not applicable for the Back to MAC recycling program.

Excite and Gospel

Excite and Gospel

Excite is a medium-dark brightened warm reddened orange in a Cremesheen finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft and creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is slightly more muted and more reddened than Korean Candy Sheen Supreme, more muted and more orange than Lady Danger, and more muted and more red than So Chaud.
Gospel is a medium-dark muted reddened plum in a Lustre finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft and creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has medium-high pigmentation and semi-opaque to opaque buildable colour pay-off. It is darker than On Hold, lighter and warmer than Party Line, and warmer and more muted than All Out Gorgeous Mineralize Rich.

Two surprisingly wearable, ultra-flattering shades with gorgeous luminous finishes. I actually find these shades to be a refreshing change, given all the matte vampy lips and '90s-inspired cinnamon-pink lips (à la Kylie Jenner) that are all the rage right now (I love both trends, but a girl needs options, you know?). These aren't going to appeal to everyone given the time of year, but note that all the shades in this collection were chosen by Brooke Shields herself, who was inspired by her own favourite looks for day and night rather than trend or season. While both shades are inherently bright, the shiny finishes and semi-opaque colour pay-off make them a lot more wearable across skintones, and I have found that both look extremely flattering on everyone from fair to deep dark complexions.

  1. Ack, that Kylie Jenner thing. It's also making people draw really exaggerated lips - and I've seen this done with none-nude/neutrals, like RED - and it looks...bad. Lol. Like they missed their mouth or were sloppy eaters or something. I cannot get into it!

These colors are lovely, and I love that she chose them because they were colors that suited her, rather than hopping to a trend, as you said.

    1. See, I think the Kylie Jenner lip is actually really gorgeous, but I think people started overdrawing their lips because Kylie's lips look so plump (I do think she's had injections, though). But she's really only using liner very slightly outside her natural lip line. What a lot of people don't realize is that a darker liner already makes the lips appear fuller, so there's really no need for overdrawing so much. Either way, it only looks good if you line your lips smoothly and symmetrically. :P

  2. These are both really pretty and I bet they'd be super gorgeous on the lips too. I haven't gotten a chance to check this collection out yet, but I am hoping to soon.

    1. I think the eyeshadow palette is the only item that is sold out everywhere, so if you like the lipsticks, you can probably still get your hands on them. :) It's a really gorgeous collection overall. Great collab with a great beauty icon. :)

  3. I kind of want a Guerlain holiday lipstick, so Brooke Shields is a pass for now. Great colours though! I seriously thought nothing of this collection but it looks pretty good.

    1. Haha, right? I didn't think much of this collection, either, until I actually swatched everything. And then I was very pleasantly surprised! I even quite like the grey/orange packaging.

I think I might need some Guerlain lipsticks in my near future as well. Was swatching some of the Rouge Gs the other day and was like, "UNNNNGHHH SOOO PRETTY..." But I think I might get more of a nude/MLBB shade that goes with everything because I want to use it regularly (this is my new thing with expensive lipsticks; I can't just buy trend-based shades because I'll only wear them a few times).
