Tom Ford Lip Color in Pink Dusk and Violet Fatale

Tom Ford may very well be the height of luxury in cosmetics. If not in the packaging or formula or price point of the products, then in the name itself. I actually have a Tom Ford lipstick from years ago (a now-discontinued shade called Moroccan Rouge), when the packaging was still white and gold and Tom Ford's beauty line only consisted of lipsticks. (I got that lipstick with a Holt Renfrew gift card, so I technically didn't spend any of my own money on it. At the time, I was working minimal hours and not making much money, so Tom Ford was literally a luxury I could not afford.) When I went to New York last month, I was hell bent on finally getting myself some of the revamped Tom Ford lipsticks. Tom Ford has two lipstick ranges, but I focused on the original Lip Color formula, which are made with "rare and exotic ingredients including soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter, and chamomilla flower oil [to] create an ultra-creamy texture with an incredibly smooth application." Each lipstick contains "specially treated colour pigments [that] are blended to deliver pure colour with just the right balance of luminosity." They are packaged in weighty square black and gold metallic tubes with Tom Ford's initials engraved into the top of the actual lipstick bullet, and have a light sweet vanilla scent but no taste. Each lipstick contains a total of 3 grams of product, and retails for $50 USD or $55 CAD. They are exclusive to Holt Renfrew in Canada.

Pink Dusk and Violet Fatale

Pink Dusk and Violet Fatale

Pink Dusk is a light-medium soft warm pink-nude with a subtle sheen in a cream finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, lightweight, and creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is slightly darker and warmer than MAC Creme Cup, more opaque and less glossy than MAC Peach Blossom, lighter and warmer than MAC Faux, lighter and more beige than Urban Decay Naked, lighter and more pink than Tarte Pure, lighter and more opaque than YSL 8 Pink in Confidence.

Violet Fatale is a medium-dark brightened cool-toned berry-fuchsia with a subtle sheen in a cream finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, lightweight, and creamy texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is lighter and more fuchsia than MAC Rebel, darker and more berry than MAC Girl About Town, more pink than MAC Quite the Thing!, lighter and brighter than Urban Decay Venom, darker and more purple than Clinique Plushest Punch, and darker and more opaque than Revlon Smitten.

It's everything you want in a lipstick: goes on smoothly and evenly, and pigmented with full colour pay-off; feels creamy but not slippery, lightweight but moisturizing, and is long-wearing but comfortable to wear. Pure luxury. And at this price point, I can't say I expected any less. It's creamier and wears longer than MAC Mineralize Rich Lipsticks, is more lightweight and less slippery than YSL Rouge Voluptés; they remind me of Urban Decay's Revolution Lipsticks or Shiseido's Perfect Rouges. But these also have the packaging: sleek and clean, elegant and timeless. And they are weighty, like you can actually feel the luxury in your hand. I suggest, however, that if you do decide to splurge on a Tom Ford lipstick (it's one of the most expensive lipstick ranges in the world), you get a shade that you will wear often so you get more bang for your buck. I mean, I have to state this obvious: there's plenty of dupes out there for significantly cheaper that feel and execute just as beautifully. It will just lack that sense of magic and wonder of a Tom Ford product.

  1. I wanted one so badly last year for whatever reason, but the want has abated substantially since. Still, these are beautiful! Violet Fatale is perfect.

    1. These have definitely satisfied my Tom Ford lipstick cravings for now... but I still want to pick up another nude and another bold shade. I'm eyeing Sable Smoke and Black Orchid right now, lol. I might just end up buying them next time I'm at Holt's because the price difference isn't actually that big between here and the US (with the currency exchange and the transportation cost, it's actually more cost effective to buy it here, LOL). :P

But yes, Violet Fatale is beautiful... It looks amazing on its own for summer, but I think I will wear it with a darker lip liner for fall/winter for a vampier look. But I have been wearing Pink Dusk a LOT, especially with smoky eyes. <3

    1. YES! :) What else are you planning on getting there?

    2. OMG. I have a long list. I need a winter coat. Some skincare. Boots for Autumn - hopefully Frye. Definitely a handbag. Some workout clothing. Maybe a spare pair of running shoes. Warby Parker sunglasses :) Some interesting sweaters from Gap/Madewell. Some accessories for Fall.

OK, that's my current list so far. Anything you think I should add? Hehe. I love Aritzia but I can't justify their prices as I'm usually a bargain shopper. I *Almost* bought a jacket from them last year in SF, but chickened out. In hindsight it was wise to skip it as it didn't flatter my shoulder very well.

    3. Man, you got some good things on your list! I also want a pair of Frye boots. Might indulge this fall. :) Which handbag do you have your eye on?

If you're a bargain shopper, I can definitely see why you wouldn't shop at Aritzia. Their stuff is expensive, for sure, and their sales aren't usually that great (the only exception is their private sale, which is usually when I do my bulk of shopping). I like Aritzia because I find a lot of their clothing (especially in the Wilfred line) fits me really well and the style is what I'm looking for: feminine but kinda edgy but also professional. Only worth the price if it fits well, though. Good thing you skipped the jacket!

I would stock up on cosmetics that are cheaper in the US than in Europe (which is pretty much everything), lol. There's always fun things in US drugstores, too. :)

    4. Haha yes! I've been eyeing stuff for awhile and I recently lost some weight after working on the food intolerance 'project' so none of my older clothing actually fit me any more. The strange thing is that even shoes become loose. I'm tempted to get a Marc Jacobs - still. Resisted and got a Coach when I was in Seattle in March because the Coach was more unique. Nobody really carries a Coach in Norway - yet. But I'm also tempted by a bag from Kate Spade's Saturday line. Let's see what happens :)

Yes, I love Aritzia. I shall stop by and see what they have. Definitely making a list now. I also want to go to the Joe Fresh store as they seem to have some really nice sweaters and shirts. Fit is so tricky sometimes - what looks good on the hanger doesn't always translate well especially since I have really broad shoulders but small hips. Damned carrot structure :)

Haha, yes. Cosmetics are on the list for sure. I am already imagining the Sephora and Nordstrom damage. *HUG* Thanks for the tips though. Always grateful as you have great taste. A shame we haven't met in person yet. One day!

    5. One day, Fieran! You like lots of Canadian things already -- Aritzia, Joe Fresh, MAC. ;) It's only a matter of time before you come visit us here in Toronto!

I find Coach is more overplayed here but it's probably because it's so accessible. There's a Coach store in nearly every mall. Same with Michael Kors. I reckon the way Europeans think about American brands is the way we think about European brands, lol. You should do some outlet shopping in the US, in Pennsylvania or New York. Lots of cheap designer shopping to be done!

  3. These are both so pretty! I'm trying to think about what I want to treat myself with if I get a job soon, but since I no longer live by a Nordstrom (ugly cry), I am now limited, because I hate returning things by mail. I guess I could splurge on something at Sephora, haha.

    1. Haha, how far is your closest Nordstrom? It's like me and Holt Renfrew (our highest end department store in Canada), which is the only store you can get Tom Ford. I live 40 minutes away from the closest one, but am usually far too lazy to make the drive. :P

Sephora has sooooo many things you could splurge on! Seriously, first world make-up junkie problems, LOL!
