MAC A Fantasy of Flowers: Mineralize Skinfinishes

on
Monday, February 3, 2014

This coming Thursday, MAC will be launching their first official Spring colour collection called A Fantasy of Flowers (it is currently available online). It is inspired by "a drifting dreamworld, bursting with brilliant blooms of colour... as a magical fantasy emerges glowing with a floral essence." This collection will see the launch of 35 products, 20 of which are new and limited edition, five of which are re-promotes, and ten of which are permanent. A Fantasy of Flowers will see the release of two shades of Mineralize Skinfinish, both of which are re-promoted shades. Mineralize Skinfinish is "a luxurious velvet-soft powder with high-frost metallic finish to add buffed-up highlights to cheeks, or an overall ultra-deluxe polish to the face." Each Mineralize Skinfinish comes in a regular black packaging with a clear lid, contains 9 grams of product, and retails for $35.

Perfect Topping

Stereo Rose

Perfect Topping and Stereo Rose

Perfect Topping is a mélange of light peach, dark peach, ivory, lavender, and silvered grey. When swirled together, they create a light beige-peach with a soft frosted sheen. This is a re-promoted shade from 2009's Sugarsweet collection, and is limited edition. It has a lightweight, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is more peach and less metallic than Soft and Gentle, and darker and much more peach than Lightscapade.
Stereo Rose is mélange of peach, coral, gold, and bronze. When swirled together, they create a medium warm peachy coral with a subtle champagne-gold metallic-sheen. This is a re-promoted shade from 2005's Goldplay collection, and is limited edition. It has a lightweight, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter and much more coral than Gold Deposit, less pink than Peachykeen Blush, and lighter and less bronze than Peachtwist Blush.

First off, yes, Stereo Rose is coming back! For those who missed it the last three times it was released (in 2005, 2010, and 2012), you can get your hands on it now. I'm not sure if it's going to be quite as coveted as before since there are so many brands with similar offerings these days, but if you were set on getting Stereo Rose, here's your chance. On that note, though, this launch's version of Stereo Rose does seem a little different than previous releases; this one seems lighter, softer, and less pink-coral than before. However, each Mineralize Skinfinish does vary a little bit from one another as each one has a slightly different amount of colour veining, so one may appear more peach or more coral. I still think this one is a really pretty rendition, but it is slightly different from the original, so try swatching in store first.

Now, Perfect Topping is also a re-promote, and I don't have the original one from 2009's Sugarsweet collection, but I've been told that this one is warmer and more peach-toned than the original, which is cooler and more pink. No complaints here, as I find this one to be absolutely gorgeous on the skin. I always think MAC needs more highlighting options because their permanent range only has three Mineralize Skinfinish shades — Soft and Gentle, Lightscapade, and Gold Deposit — which can be too metallic, too pale, or too dark, respectively. Perfect Topping (this collection's version of it, at least) is light enough to be a great highlight shade on almost all skintones (except for very fair, which might be able to use it as a very soft blush) and warm enough to prevent skin from looking ashy, and it's shimmery enough to add a lovely illumination to the skin but not so frosted that it looks metallic and emphasizes skin texture. And having just gone to Sephora to swatch Hourglass' Ambient Lighting Powders, I can say that the texture on Perfect Topping is very, very similar — very soft, finely-milled, almost velvety, but not powdery. I'm not a fan of all of MAC's Mineralize Skinfinish shades, but I do truly think these are both worth checking out if you like your complexion to be on the glowy, ethereal side.

  1. I don't think this collection is calling to me, thank goodness. I wish the lipsticks weren't lustres - my least favorite finish! (Well, maybe frost :P)

    1. Lol, that's fair, this collection won't be for everyone! For some reason, I love this collection -- it follows the whole "electro-pastel" trend that's going on, sheerer washes of bright colour. Kinda refreshing after a long fall/winter of super-saturated dark, vampy shades (for lips AND eyes). Lustres aren't my favourite finish, either, but there are a lots Lustre shades that I LOVE (Plumful, Jubilee, See Sheer, Lustering, Syrup, etc.). I agree on Frosts, though, lol!

  2. I'm kind of the opposite of Larie - the entire collection is calling to me, although no product in particular is. It's so pretty and aptly named. I feel happy just looking at the reviews of this stuff.

    1. LOL!!! I feel the same way you do. I am loving the colour story of this collection. I think MAC did a great job of executing the floral theme for their Spring collection, because it could've been so predictable (I mean, flowers for Spring is pretty cliche). I just love the looks that these products create. :)

    1. Lol, RIGHT?! It's my current favourite highlighter. Just so wildly flattering, and not too frosty. LOVE. <3

  4. Though these look really nice, it's so misleading that these have the same name as MSFs that were released in the past, but they are not the came colours! Either way, this reminds me that I need to bust out my Stereo Rose and give it some love.

    1. I totally agree, ESPECIALLY with Stereo Rose because it's such a cult favourite. I think they should've made it as similar as possible to the original, which is what gave it such a coveted status to begin with. I think this version of Perfect Topping is more widely flattering than the original, though, which was much pinker. Regardless of the names, I still think both look gorgeous. :)

  5. I'm sort of in-between Larie and Liz - the collection as a whole is so pretty and happy-looking, but nothing is screaming at me to buy it (thank goodness), though I still sorta want to buy ONE THING if ya know what I mean? I'm having a moment this week where I just want to BUY SOMETHING PRETTY ALREADY...sheesh.
