Friday Five: Ritual de lo Habitual

This week's Friday Five:
  1. What's a bad habit you'd like to get rid of? I should say smoking because, let's be honest, it's pretty much the worst habit in the world... but I enjoy it too much right now to quit. But I have plenty of other bad habits: spending money that I don't have, leaving my laundry in the dryer for days (and then leaving it in my laundry basket instead of folding them once I get it out of the dryer), not taking care of my shoes (I'm too lazy to clean salt stains or buff out scratches or whatever and then my shoes don't last more than a year), not filling up my gas tank until it's down to the empty mark, going to bed extremely late and then waking up extremely late (like, on my days off, I sleep at 6:00am and wake up at 2:00pm)...

  2. What's a good habit that's taken you really long to establish? Making a bill payment schedule. I've been pretty irresponsible with money most of my life, and got myself into a lot of debt in my early 20s. So I've become a lot more anal with paying all my bills on time. I have an entire agenda dedicated just to financial planning.

  3. What's a good habit that doesn't take much effort but others seem to envy? Eating more healthily. I started eating breakfast (usually toast with peanut butter) instead of just having coffee (a habit that started way back in university), which gives me more energy and boosts my metabolism. I also used to get fast food or take-out everyday for lunch, and aside from costing a ton of money (at least $50 a week!), I was getting fatter and lazier and unhappier. So now, I always make my own lunch, which usually consists of a cucumber and cream cheese sandwich, and two types of fruit (usually clementines, apples, grapes, or berries).

  4. What kind of unusual rituals do you go through in daily life? I wash my hands a lot. It's not unusual to wash your hands, of course, but it's the frequency at which I do it that's odd. It was an OCD when I was younger (I had to wash my hands like, once every ten minutes), and though I've controlled it quite a lot more now, I'm still something of a germaphobe. I also have to be playing music while I'm getting ready, while I'm showering (I actually have an iPod dock in the bathroom), and also while driving. The only time I really like quiet is when I'm reading and when I'm sleeping. And I wash my hair everyday. Everyone says you should only wash your hair every other day, but I can't help it. I use hair product everyday and feel like my hair is grimy if I don't wash it. Oh, and I brush my teeth in the shower, which some people find odd.

  5. What's the weirdest ritual you've heard of in others? I actually don't know a lot of people's weird rituals. Or nothing that I would think is really odd. Like, a lot of my friends smoke pot before going to bed, but I don't find it that weird. It's just a habit for them, I suppose.

  1. I wash my hands a lot, too. If they feel grimy or have any sort of oily feeling, I have to wash them. I don't think it's quite a tic, but then, if I have to go with greasy hands or something for a while (like the in the car), it's absolutely the first thing I have to do when I get home, haha.

    1. Lol! It's the first thing I do when I get home, too, regardless of whether my hands are greasy or not, lol. It's actually a sickness, but I'm actually trying to make an effort to wash my hands less because I'm starting to get cuts everywhere from having such dry hands in this weather. I've already stopped using hand sanitizer, opting for anti-bacterial wipes instead because they're less drying.

    1. RIGHT? That's why I only do laundry like, twice a month. I actually don't mind putting my stuff in the washer and dryer, it's more like what I have to do after my stuff's dry. :P

  3. Haha, a few weeks ago I got to 11am sleep/6pm wake-up. Worst!! I am definitely a night owl, but hate that feeling of waking up and the day's gone. Even worse when it's already dark out.

    1. WHOA, you have surpassed even my level of nocturnalism, LOL! I usually try to sleep by 5:00am on most days, but on my days off, I usually do 6:00am sleep/2:00pm wake-up. :P

But I agree, it's terrible waking up when it's already dark out. It totally messes with my circadian rhythm. Winter is the worst for this. In the summer, I can wake up at 4:00pm and it's still super-bright outside! I guess this is why people get the winter blues, eh?
