NARS Guy Bourdin: Cinematic Lipstick in Goodbye Emmanuelle and Full Frontal

In October, NARS released their new holiday collection in collaboration with fashion photographer  Guy Bourdin. There has been quite a bit of controversy over Bourdin's photography over the years, which I will not comment on here, but François Nars cites Guy Bourdin as the sole inspiration for him becoming a make-up artist, so I see this collection as more of a reflection of how Bourdin influenced Nars with colour. The NARS Guy Bourdin collection consists of 17 individual products and six sets, and sees the release of five new and limited shades of Cinematic Lipstick, of which I picked up two. The Cinematic Lipstick "delivers intense colour saturation with a gorgeously glossy shine. Creamy and comfortable, featuring an innovative blend of lip conditioners and antioxidants known to hydrate, nourish, and protect lips." They are housed in NARS' signature black rubberized tubes. Each lipstick contains a total of 3.1 grams of product, and retails for $30.

Goodbye Emmanuelle and Full Frontal

Goodbye Emmanuelle and Full Frontal

Goodbye Emmanuelle is a medium slightly cool-toned bubblegum pink with a glossy finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is lightweight and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and colour pay-off. It is cooler than Urban Decay Turn On and YSL #29 Rose Opéra Rouge Volupté, slightly cooler than MAC Chatterbox, warmer than MAC Pink Nouveau, and darker and cooler than MAC Please Me.
Full Frontal is a medium-dark vibrant purple-toned fuchsia pink with a glossy finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. The texture is lightweight and creamy, and it goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It is more pink than MAC Up the Amp, slightly darker and more purple than MAC Love Forever! Pro Longwear Lipcreme, lighter and more glossy than Illamasqua Welt, more muted and slightly more purple than Shiseido RS 320, and lighter and more muted than YSL #19 Fuchsia in Rage Rouge Volupté Shine.

There are five shades of lipstick that were released with the Guy Bourdin collection, but these two were the ones that caught my eye. They both have their fair share of dupes from other brands, but are actually really unique to the NARS range of lipsticks. I love the formula of the Cinematic Lipstick, which is smooth, lightweight, and pigmented, and actually stay hydrating on the lips. I would say that it's like the more pigmented version of MAC's Mineralize Rich Lipstick and YSL's Rouge Volupté Shine, or a less creamy version of Urban Decay's Revolution Lipstick and YSL's Rouge Volupté. I do hope NARS makes these permanent at some point because I genuinely think they fill in a gap in their current lipstick range. Fans of bubblegum pinks will love Goodbye Emmanuelle, but my must-have of the lipsticks from this collection is Full Frontal, which is a gorgeous purple-toned fuchsia that isn't too bright or too dark and perfect for all year round. It is also the one to sell out the fastest, so if you had your eye on it, you better see if you can find it at your closest NARS retailer, 'cause it's sold out nearly everywhere (I actually grabbed the last one at my nearest Sephora location!).

  1. I've been tempted by Full Frontal. I don't have enough purple lipsticks :) I'm a bit worried that Full Frontal is selling out. I'm going to San Francisco next week and so hoping to get one. I should probably call up the stores and ask if they have it in stock.

    1. You need purple lips in your life, Fieran! You should definitely call ahead to see if they have it in stock, 'cause I know it sold out really fast here. You should also get MAC's Rebel, if you don't already have it. ;)

  3. I do love shades like this, and they work well with my skin tone. I saw a gal in NYC with skin like mine wearing a shade just like this and it was BADASS.

    1. Haha, right? Lipstick has made such a huge comeback this year, it's hard not to get tempted into more, more, more. My go-to look has been clean, glowy skin, winged liner, and bright/dark lips. :)
