MAC Stroke of Midnight: Eyeshadow Palette in Warm

on
Sunday, November 3, 2013

Last week, MAC released a new collection called Stroke of Midnight, which features a variety of colour kits and is the second part of MAC's Holiday 2013 offerings. The packaging of this year's holiday collections are inspired by the elegance and geometric designs of 1920s Art Deco, as well as the lavish lifestyles of the Studio 54 era. Stroke of Midnight consists of 19 products, and sees the release of three new and limited edition eyeshadow palettes. Each palette features five shades of eyeshadow, and comes with a mini double-ended 213/266 brush. They are housed in special edition black mirrored compacts with a white geometric design, yellow gold trim, and matching secondary cardstock packaging. Each eyeshadow palette contains a total of 4 grams of product, and retails for $47.50.

Femme Fi, Amber Lights, Mulch, Socialite, and Midnight Hour

Femme Fi, Amber Lights, Mulch, Socialite, and Midnight Hour

Femme Fi is a light soft golden beige in a Veluxe Pearl finish. This is a re-promoted shade from 2008's Neo Sci-Fi collection, and is limited edition. It has a soft, buttery texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is lighter and more beige than Ricepaper, and more golden than Dazzlelight.
Amber Lights is a medium copper-gold with orange undertones in a Frost finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, buttery texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is darker and more copper than Honey Lust, and lighter and more gold than Texture.
Mulch is a medium-dark reddened brown with bronze shimmer-sheen in a Velvet finish. This is a permanent shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is less plum than Twinks, and darker and more reddened than Sable.
Socialite is a medium warm mustard brown in a Satin finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a soft, silky texture, and goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is much more yellow-toned than Soba, and lighter and more muted than Uninterrupted Pro Longwear Eyeshadow.
Midnight Hour is a blackened neutral brown in a Velvet finish. This is a new and limited edition shade. It has a slightly drier texture, but goes on smoothly and evenly. It has high pigmentation and opaque colour pay-off. It can be layered and blended out easily. It is warmer than Mystery, and slightly lighter than Brun.

Overall, this is a really nice warm palette option from MAC. The only remotely fussy shade is Midnight Hour because it has a somewhat drier texture, but it still layers and blends out really easily in execution. I'm glad that they decided to re-promote Femme Fi with this palette, which is a fan favourite — it's a great highlighting shade that isn't too light, white, or bright, works well across a variety of skintones, and just has a generally phenomenal formula. Socialite is actually one of the more unique shades I've come across recently, especially in the world of brown eyeshadows. It doesn't look very pretty or flattering in the pan (it basically looks like muted mustard), but it looks so good in execution on almost everybody, and has a lovely smooth, buttery texture to boot. I know that there are two permanent shades in this palette, and if you have both of them, it would almost definitely make this palette a pass... but as far as permanent inclusions go, MAC picked really well for this one. Both Amber Lights and Mulch are beautiful shades with amazing formulas and are some of MAC's most popular eyeshadows in general. Again, I really appreciate the mixture of finishes in this, as well as the variety in colour because you can create so many different looks from this one palette, from natural to softly smoky to dramatically smoky. Not the most unique palette, but extremely versatile.

  1. I think the colour selection for this palette is so great -- reminds me of log cabins, fireplace, sweaters and pumpkin soup.

    1. LOL, I've never heard of an eyeshadow being compared to pumpkin soup but I totally see it.

I've actually been really enjoying using this palette, though, more than the plethora of warm palettes that MAC has released recently. I usually don't love palettes that also include permanent shades (because I already have them, lol) but Amber Lights and Mulch are so pretty that I don't mind at all. :)

    2. Love Amber Lights :) Denise, try Amber Lights with Shop & Drop (dark blue from Shop Cook collection). For some reason that blue becomes blackish on Amber Lights.

Midnight Hour is so pretty. Gah, they need to sell that as a single. I already have Amber Lights and Mulch. I actually skipped the whole collection as I kept thinking that I have so many of the similar shades...

    3. Amber Lights is one of my favourite permanent shades. :) And yes, I reckon Amber Lights would look amazing with Shop & Drop!

Midnight Hour is pretty similar to shades like Mystery and Brun, so I don't think you're really missing out. And, honestly, I don't think you really NEED any of these palettes because you probably do have really similar shades, lol!

  2. I don't really gravitate toward warm-toned palettes, they tend to clash with my skintone somehow...I'm really quite a weird beige color and warm shades can go so, so wrong on me...

    1. I think it depends on the type of warm shade, you know? Maybe shades with too much of an orange undertone don't look flattering on you... or maybe ones with too much yellow... But it's all about finding the right warm shades, 'cause I don't think there's anyone that looks bad in ALL warm shades, lol. I have a very yellow undertone but I wear all colours, anyway! :P
